FREE HOME-MOVER GUIDE

Essential Information For Moving Home

1. Pre-Move Notification - Who To Tell You Are Moving.

With the rise in identity theft, it is crucial that all service providers are advised as soon as you are certain of moving.

Gas, Water, Electric & Phone Companies
Banks, Building Societies, credit/store card providers
Satellite TV or Cable provider
The Passport Office
Royal Mail to ensure mail forwarding is in place
Your Employer & Children's School/Nursery
D.V.L.A. for your vehicle records and driving licence
Subscription services such as book clubs and video stores
Government departments such as child benefit & family credit
Doctors, Dentists, Opticians and other medical services (including Vets)
Professional Services such as Insurers and Financial Advisors
Local Council in order to finalise your council tax statement
Home catalogue companies
TV License
Home deliveries such as milkman, newsagents and supermarkets

2. Advice & Instructions - How Everything Works.
It is equally important to remind the occupants of the property you are moving in to that these items require notes on operation and/or location.

Boiler, hot water and central heating system
Alarm system including code (always change the code immediately)
Remote controlled garage doors or gates (including all controllers)
Any built in appliances such as cookers, microwaves, dishwashers, etc
Security gates or doors
Keys for windows, all doors, sheds, garages and any outbuildings
Hook for loft ladder
Water stop-cock and utility meters
Fuse box.

3. Pre-Move Preparation - How To Make Your Move Easier On The Day.

If you have young children, arrange for somebody to have them for the day, including the school pick up.
Pets don’t enjoy moving so once again, see if you can find a home for them for the day.
Deliver one spare key to your Estate Agent or Solicitor and leave the rest of the keys in the house to avoid a trip on completion day.
Start running down the contents of your freezer two weeks before the move and ensure it is thoroughly defrosted and cleaned on move day.
It’s never to soon to start packing so start with your shed, loft and garage contents, plus all your off-season clothes.
Sell unwanted items at a car boot sale or in the Local Free-ads. Why pay to move unwanted items from A to B?
Do your final washing two days before the move and pack all but your moving clothes the day before.
Compile a plan of where you want your furniture in your new home to avoid indecision on the day.
Disassemble any items of furniture that aren’t likely to be used before the move.
If you’re running low on space in your home, place all your boxes in a garage or shed. You’ll find it easier and less stressful with more space.
Have an ‘essentials’ bag or box prepared which contains all the necessary items you’ll need for the day, including, first-aid kit, some basic tools such as screwdrivers, tea & coffee (plus kettle!), scissors, toilet rolls, money, notepad and pen, torch and light bulbs.

4. Dealing With Removers - Important Things You need To Consider.
Removal Companies will not move items in or out of a loft due to health & safety regulations.
Make sure all boxes are properly sealed and marked with their room destination in your new home.
Removal Companies do not generally disassemble or reassemble furniture. If you don’t do it, you may be liable to an extra charge.
The same applies to kitchen appliances that require plumbing in or plugs removing.
If you had difficulty with any item when you moved in, such as a sofa, tell the Removal firm well in advance. Forearmed is forewarned!
Ensure all hallways and landings are clear because if a Removal Man trips over, it’s your possessions he’s carrying.
Ensure the Removal Truck can park as close to your front door as possible.
Is access to your new home as good as your current one? Your lovely sofa may not fit in your new character cottage so check measurements.
Don’t load large boxes with heavy items such as books or paperwork. Try to mix up the contents to avoid making boxes excessively heavy/weak.
If you are moving pictures and/or mirrors that aren’t protected, the Removal Company will not accept any liability for breakages.
Plants don’t travel well in Removal Trucks so unless it’s totally impossible, always arrange to move your plants yourself.
Remember that any crisis you encounter on the day, your Removers have probably seen a hundred times so rely on their experience.
